Why IV Sedation in Dentistry Is Safer Than You Think

Video Transcript:

Safety is number one. It’s super important, but the fear does not need to exist to the extent that’s out there.

Hi, I’m Dr. Scott Sayre. I’ve been practicing dentistry for 47 years, doing IV sedation the entire time.

The patient should not be getting in trouble. All of the medications, for the most part that we use, are reversible. Nitrous oxide, you can turn off. So in recovering a patient who is too deep or having a medical problem, you can do it literally within a couple of minutes. Everybody’s taught to use all the modalities they need to keep a great airway.

And so, there really should not be this fear out there in dentistry. It’s a super safe way to do it. It’s actually safer for many patients than for them to be upset and have a episode of hypertension and really not wanting to be at the dentist. It’s a great way to handle our patients.
